These symbols, which have been in use since the Renaissance, denote elements of medieval alchemy, in this case the metals Iron and Copper, and the planets Mars and Venus which took their names from Roman deities.

The shapes that these symbols represent are a spear with a shield and a hand mirror.

They were first used as gender symbols by the scientist, botanist and naturalist Carl von Linné in 1751 to identify the gender of plants.
