The Chimera is a mythological monster with the body of a lion, a goat's head emerging from its back, and a serpent's tail, representing the triumph of heroism over chaos. According to myth, it was slain by the hero Bellerophon mounted on the winged horse Pegasus.

Its presence on Sicyonian coins alludes to courage, victory, and divine favor—virtues the city sought to associate with its identity.
