Minted ca. 450–350 B.C. in the Greek colony of Apollonia Pontica, located on the Thracian coast of the Black Sea (modern-day Sozopol, Bulgaria). The drachms of this city feature some of the most striking depictions of Medusa in ancient numismatics, serving as an apotropaic device to ward off evil.

In Greek mythology, the Gorgons were three monstrous sisters—Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa—daughters of Phorcys and Ceto, with Medusa being the only mortal among them.
