Obverse: Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Constantine II facing left. Legend: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C.

Reverse: Camp gate with two turrets and a star above. Legend: PROVIDENTIAE CAESS.

Legend: Constantine II was the first son of Constantine the Great and his second wife, Fausta. He was born "in the purple," meaning his father was already Augustus when he came into the world, and he grew up as a spoiled and arrogant child. He was named Caesar in the year 317, when he was only nine months old. He kept his court in Gaul, in the city of Paris, until his father's death in 337. During a meeting of the brothers and heirs in Pannonia in September 337, it was decided that Constantine II would maintain control over the western portion of the Empire: Britannia, Gaul, Hispania, and parts of North Africa. Constantine died at the hands of his brother Constans's generals in an ambush outside Aquileia during military operations. Constans then took control of his late brother's dominions.

The reverse features a camp gate, a popular numismatic motif on coins of the Constantinian dynasty that represented the protection provided by the army.
