This amulet is inspired by an ancient Greek coin that pays tribute to the god Apollo. The son of Zeus and Leto, Apollo was born on the Greek island of Delos along with his twin sister Artemis. He is one of the most important ancient deities since he was considered the god of the sun, light, health, music and prophecy. Apollo taught man the art of medicine and for this reason he is also known as “the healer”. He is the only major god who maintains the same name in both Greek and Roman mythology.
The reverse of the coin has the image of a scimitar oryx, a species of antelope that may be the origin of the unicorn legend. In ancient times, they were domesticated and tamed to be used as food or sacrificed in religious ceremonies. This species was part of the buffet of wealthy Romans and also a hunting favorite.
