In 120 he was consul, and subsequently proconsul of the province of Asia. On his return to Rome, Hadrian adopted him on February 25th, 138; he ascended the throne on the death of Hadrian on July 2nd, 138. He died in March 7th, 161 and was succeeded by Marcus Aurelius whom he had adopted.

He earned the title 'Pius', which means dutiful and respectful, for two reasons: by threatening the Senate with resignation if they did not deify Hadrian and secondly, as Hadrian had wanted, he adopted young Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius at the start of his reign. He presided over the most peaceful reign of any emperor, governing well and wisely as a compassionate ruler. He set up charities, built public works for his people, and brought in laws such as 'innocent until proven guilty'; some historians have argued it could be the greatest collective human happiness in a period of time in history.

Due to their age and the natural traces of their time in ruins, these coins require special care to preserve their relief, patina and ancient appearance.

  • Avoid applying perfumes, creams, oils, or makeup directly to the piece.
  • Do not expose it to moisture or corrosive substances.
  • To clean, use soap and water and gently dry the piece with a soft, neutral-colored cloth to absorb moisture.
  • Avoid contact with water or with sweat/natural skin acidity, as this may dull or soil the material.
  • Due to their age, these pieces are more sensitive to chemical elements, which can affect their color.
  • To clean the piece, use soapy water and gently dry it with a soft, neutral-colored cloth, removing oils and residues that may dirty it or affect its shine.
  • Store the piece in its protective leather bag.

Each coin is unique, with variations in relief, color and patina that reflect its original characteristics, marked by the passage of time.

The chain in the image is for reference only and is sold separately, it is not included with this piece.
